I'm assuming it's because it would have necessitated the U.S. taking sides in another country's civil war, which would put us right in the middle of things. I believe U.S. policy is generally to stay neutral or condemn the aftereffects of such coups, but not to become involved militarily unless later actions dictate it.
Unless there's something else I'm just missing, which is entirely possible. It's late. *g*
