bsg at comic con

So on Sunday, my coworkers' flight home to NYC was cancelled because of weather. Oddly, mine was not. In the utter chaos of the three of them trying to find new flights and re-book hotel rooms, I handed one of my co-workers a sheet of paper I had with the hotel's phone number on it. And my BSG panel notes scribbled on the back. And...I realized tonight that I never got that piece of paper back from him. AAAARGH. I am so aggravated about this stupid stupid thing. So I rewatched most of it on SCI FI to refresh ye olde memory.

Anyway, this is not dial-up friendly at all...and if you're still using dial-up, what the hell is wrong with you anyway? ;)

So I should note that I only barely made it into the room, and then I was frantically calling [livejournal.com profile] divanoir trying to find out where she was sitting, and getting to my seat, and freaking out that Jamie was there, etc., etc., and the upshot is I missed most of the trailer they showed. I am not happy about this. I only really remember two things which I'm assuming you already know about if you like to get spoiled. I guess I can put it at the end in case there's anyone not in the know out there.

I was amused to discover that Baltar and Six were actually sitting right in front of us! Hi guys!
Photobucket

I will also note that I was sitting waaaaay in the back, so all of my photos are actually of the giant screen, not of the stage itself. Oh, for the glory days last year when [livejournal.com profile] nnaylime was there to save me a third row seat. *sniffle*

The panel was moderated, as you know, by Kevin Smith, which is always fun, although it also means less audience questions because Kevin likes to hear himself talk. Then again, less questions from the audience at Comic Con is not necessarily a bad thing.

He asked what was ahead for next "season" and was told things were going to get even worse for everyone, even darker. That there would be a lot of recriminations.

Photobucket

Eick said "Lee gets really fat this time." This led Kevin to ask Jamie what his secret of quick weight loss was, and Jamie made a bulimia joke that didn't go over well, then referenced Jenny Craig and a new diet plan he'll have coming out. Then he talked about being a politican and getting to wear suits and noted that his hair got better and better and more and more orange as his hair dye wore off. Hee!

Photobucket

And he snarked that Trucco and Katee had to wear these sweatproof suits that made them waddle around in their own juices, and Katee said they got their revenge, and Jamie said "Don't tell them that," and it was all very cryptic and made me want to know, sob. But he then said he liked being a catalog model for a bit. Smith was like that's it? I'm moving on to someone more loquacious, and moved on to James Callis.

Who, as I referenced in another post, stole the show IMO. I'm biased because I love him, of course, but really, he looked great and gave thoughtful and amusing answers and was just his usual delightful self. Jamie seemed fairly subdued and tired and not necessarily wanting to be there -- considering he probably got shanghaied into the panel at the last minute, that's very possible -- but did loosen up more as things went on. Plus the fact is that Jamie's more introverted than the rest of them, so I wasn't surprised that he faded a bit in such a large arena.

But on to James. Kevin referenced the fact that Gaius gets laid the most on the show, and after a joke about paying off RDM James said that he actually struggled a lot with the whole idea of Baltar being both this supposed man of god and this nymphomaniac. And that even though Americans just assume the villains get more "tail," as he put it, it took him a while to get a handle on that aspect of Baltar's character. Eick joked that Callis leads them all to have these epic conversations about Baltar's motivations when really all he has to do is sleep with the girl!

With the season one hair and the button down shirt, he looked just like Baltar! It was pretty amusing. And hot.

Then Kevin called Starbuck the greatest female role model in the history of entertainment, which, if that's actually the case, we women are well and truly fucked. Ahem. *g* Katee seemed a bit taken aback by the idea herself and hoped that parents would encourage kids to only model after the GOOD parts of Starbuck, heh. "Use protection." Kevin also pointed out that she's a lesbian role model, too, which took her aback as well. Kevin referenced Princess Leia and said that what's great about Starbuck is she never has to be rescued. (And I feel a big rant coming on about Leia being a much more positive role model than Starbuck, but I digress.) Katee talked about how she's this hero but she's also a girl, and talked about how in the boxing match with Kara and Lee, Kara's actually totally cheating because it's the only way a girl could win that match. Jamie jumped in about that and said something about being rescued -- I didn't hear this when I was there but I checked the SCI FI feed and he said he was Princess Leia (I was wrong, Asta!) and Katee said she's had to rescue both her guys (Lee and Sam) a couple times, but that it was okay, they could just sit there and look pretty. To much whooping from the audience. Partly from me. *g*

Katee looked really nice, quite well dressed for her. *g*

Trucco admitted that being a Cylon was basically like winning the television lottery. He was kind of amazed he ever even became a regular to which Katee said "You're welcome," ahem.

Photobucket

Tricia was held up as the one person on the panel who gets to play multiple roles, so she talked about that for a while, specifically about Shelly Godfrey and how she was able to make her just a little different from Six. She shared that in the scene from "Six Degrees of Separation" when Gaius barges in on Shelly in the bathroom stall, that James totally slammed the stall door into her knees because she's so tall and the stall was so small. (Wow, look at the assonance in that sentence!) Poor tall, gorgeous Tricia.

Photobucket

She said what she's said before about how it's hard to act as Six in scenes when no one else is supposed to be able to see her, and Katee reminisced about the time that she had to sit on her because she wasn't supposed to know she was there. This image sent Kevin (and, I'm sure, many in the audience) into horny rapture. Katee and Tricia were very cute and giggly with each other, no surprise there.

Photobucket

Oh! And she said that Hatch was VERY UNCOMFORTABLE with her snaking herself around him in one scene and he was supposed to be delivering his lines and he couldn't because Tricia's hands were on him and this is about when I died of laughter. "I've never had to deal with this before!" he sputtered. Oh, Hatch. You should just be happy for the play.

Kevin mentioned that when the Galactica dropped into the atmosphere in Exodus, he came. Thanks, Kevin. He asked everyone what their favorite badass moments of the show were. Jamie said the end of season three with the pullback toward Earth. Trucco complained that Jamie stole his answer. So he stole Kevin's answer instead.

Photobucket

Katee talked about shooting guns -- she loves when the Galactica fires its guns, and her favorite was when she got to do two-fisted gun shooting in early second season. She was way too excited about it. Then she mentioned that Tahmoh got shit from the director for acting like a girl with the guns, she said it was a "combination of Blue Steel and Xanadu" and did some posing. It was pretty hilarious. She noted that Jamie always asks why she gets to be the only SWAT team member in a t-shirt while everyone else is in helmets and armor, and in her best Valley Girl says, "I don't know, I just did it."

Tricia says something slightly spoilery which I'll put at the end. James cited the scene between Adama and Tigh in....Eye of Jupiter? Where they're talking about the food shortage and Tigh gives the "Paper shortage" line. I thought it was really cute that that stood out to James as his favorite moment, hee. He loved the reality and tragedy and humor of it. He also said that filming the end of BSG was like being in Apocalypse Now, with total chaos and multiple sets and not knowing where you're supposed to be and confusion and darkness, and he whipped out the American accent at one point which always makes me happy.

Photobucket

Ron Moore, of course, said that his favorite moment was when Gaius puts his head down in LDYB2 and lifts it up and it's a year later, because THAT HAD NEVER EVER BEEN DONE BEFORE AND WAS TOTALLY AUDACIOUS AND ORIGINAL AND NEW, except of course that Alias did it first, and it was TWO years. Yeah, I kind of had a Mary Hart seizure at that point. I made a remark to [livejournal.com profile] divanoir that the problem with RDM is that he clearly doesn't watch any OTHER television, so he always thinks he's doing something first and he's not. A girl in front of me said, "maybe that was the year he had mono," LOL. Eick made a joke that his moment was watching Starbuck and Six "pound the everloving shit out of each other." Katee and Tricia noted that that was what made them become friends. *g*

Photobucket

James was asked if he had trouble balancing who Baltar was with who his followers wanted him to be, to which James said "Yes." And noted that he's probably bored with these people who don't challenge him at all, which I thought was interesting.

Katee was asked if she secretly wished she was the final Cylon. She doesn't. Mainly because it's so much extra work.

Trucco shared how Aaron Douglas was the one who told him he was a Cylon and he did an Aaron impression that was very funny and pretty dead on. "Dude, we're Cylons." Trucco said he didn't see how that could be since most of the people on set didn't even know his first name. "A lot of people call me Steve."

This sequence of pictures really really makes me want to write Lee/Kara/Sam for [livejournal.com profile] dooooooom, by the way. Yum.

An audience member asked for favorite character moments. Jamie said in LDYB1 when Starbuck hit Apollo and Apollo instantly decided to hit back. And THAT is when I had a good old fangirl flail. (Me too, Jamie! Me too!) "He's Princess Leia. He's not scared, he'll slap anything." Said that moment defined the L/K relationship. ([livejournal.com profile] em_meredith, wasn't there a blog post that compared the BSG characters to the SW characters, and Lee was Leia and we thought that was brilliant? LOL. No wonder they're both my favorites.)

Photobucket
Look, Jamie, Trucco is wearing a short-sleeve t-shirt! Why aren't yooooou? Aren't you warm underneath those bright lights?

Tricia said it was the Gina/Pegasus arc. James gave a thoughtful answer about how the main emotion he accesses as Baltar is guilt, having billions of dead people on his conscience, and how amazing it is to work with that. Guilt and shame is "the lubricant inside Gaius Baltar." James basically pwned everyone is what I'm saying.

Photobucket

And then...in comes Tahmoh! Woot!!

Photobucket

He did admit he was smiling way too much while he was firing the big ass guns. Hee. Said he was okay with the acting like a girl thing. "Trucco, you defended me?" "Half-heartedly," said Jamie. Hee. Then in the middle of an answer Tahmoh says to Kevin, "Hey, it's such an honor to meet you, I love your work!" It was really adorable. Tahmoh was adorable. Especially when he started taking pictures of the other panelists. SO CUTE.

When asked who the final Cylon is, Eick made a Boxy joke, just to make [livejournal.com profile] nnaylime happy. There was also a joke somewhere earlier about Gaeta almost being picked as a Cylon.

Did the characters have closure? James says yes, but he could have had more affairs. Tricia says yes. Katee says Kara finds peace, which is all she wanted for her. Trucco "can't say shit" about his character. Jamie gives a whole long answer about how the ending of the show is sublime and perfect and it is an ending. Said the final readthrough was a "disgraceful orgy of self-indulgent tears," and the end does everything justice. But doesn't say anything about Lee!!! Tahmoh jokes that he dies a horrible death, so he has closure. Then he says the last two episodes are "perfect."

Photobucket
Wow, that's a whole lot of pretty.

Someone asked how they have so much alcohol amid such privations. Jamie loved that question. Said they're breaking down all the produce to make alcohol. Jamie and Katee both said the amount of alcohol consumed was unrealistic -- you'd be sick or dead. *g* Eick admitted that at first they were all about conserving the alcohol, but it was too much fun watching Tigh get drunk. Then Katee and Tahmoh both imitated Hogan's laugh, which was awesome. The way to my heart is a Tigh impersonation, people! It's true.

Then RDM was asked something about writing, whatever. Then they showed a trailer for Caprica, which looked okay. Eric Stoltz! But before that Kevin told us to say goodbye, and we did, in spades. Huge applause turned into a huge standing ovation, it was actually really something, there was quite an emotional swell in the room. Eventually the panel also stood up and applauded us as well. A really nice moment.

Slightly spoilery stuff ahead.......only slightly though, I think.

Okay, the only two things I remember from the 4.5 clip is: Adama and Roslin kissing (!!) and Lee and Kara standing side by side firing guns (GUH). I read that there was an L/K kiss but I must have missed that, DAMMIT. I also vaguely remember a lot of people yelling and looking angry, LOL. Man, I hope they rerun it somewhere soon.

Oh, and Tricia's vaguely spoilery answer to her favorite moment was saying that she finally got to fire a gun, and that she's firing a gun alongside Gaius (!!). She said the armorer told her she was the first woman to fire that particular gun, then she turned around and Katee had it too. Jamie said, "Armorers say that to all the girls. I would, if I was an armorer." <---- Possibly my favorite line of the panel. James also said he liked firing the guns too. So apparently there is a LOT of gun fighting, and with shippy couples doing it side by side? I am all flaily over that. Seriously, Lee and Kara firing guns side by side gets me ALMOST as excited as the idea of them doing other things.

That's it! Congratulations if you made it this far.

Overall it was a really fun panel and I'm very glad I made it into the damn room! And I hadn't seen Tahmoh before and now I'm really looking forward to seeing him at Dragon Con (if Dollhouse doesn't put the kibosh on it, sigh). And it was also a nice reminder of my James love, so I can keep in mind that even if Jamie doesn't make D*C, at least James will be there. Sniffle.
