the day after
Nov. 6th, 2008 12:49 amHad a good election night.
oeilade decided last minute to have some people over, so I dragged
girlunravelled and
bexatious over there with me after getting our free Ben & Jerry's (and being creeped out by the CNN holograms while we ate dinner at a pub). I have to confess that after Obama was announced as the projected winner, I mostly felt numb. I was just in total shock, not only that we won, but that it was all over, and so quickly and decisively. I hadn't let myself believe that would truly happen.
After Obama's victory speech we took to the streets (well, us Brooklynites were headed toward the subway; everyone else took to the streets) and walked over to Union Square, which was filled with people and a scene of utter joy and chaos. People were whooping and chanting and dancing and singing, while cops stood casually around the perimeter, clearly expecting not to have to actually do anything. Taxis and trucks would honk their horns as they drove by. While walking down the street groups of people would yell out "Obama" to each other and give victory fist pumps. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen. I told
oeilade that it was like the ending of "V" after the alien spaceships leave. Free at last!
I did find myself finally becoming a bit more emotional today, especially as I read this editorial in the NYT and realized that finally, FINALLY, we can do something REAL about global warming, and perhaps yet head off the apocalypse. And that maybe, MAYBE, health care will finally become a right in this country, and not a privilege. And then Olbermann had a campaign montage on Countdown that got me a little misty. Sniffle.
But really, how could he have lost when he had Bat Boy's endorsement?
I was extremely pleased to read that the First Puppy (and how cute was that?) will be a shelter rescue dog. Major kudos to Best Friends for getting that petition going.
I do so love this electoral map by population.
Of course, it's not all good news. Very disappointing and saddening about Prop 8, and about Arizona and Florida's measures as well. Just goes to show that we have more work to do. (Thank god for Massachusetts!) Am very pleased, however, that the South Dakota abortion ban was struck down, AGAIN. Geez. And good for Michigan on medical marijuana and Washington on assisted suicide.
Random sentence from an article about Karl Rove's "reporting" on election night: He also claimed that "we've had an African American first family for many years," citing the Cosby Show as one example. Um....huh?
One more thing: can you even believe this stuff about Sarah Palin purportedly spending tens of thousands of dollars more than $150K on clothes, including suits for hubby Todd? With a rumor about asking staffers to use their own credit cards? An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books. LOL.
All right, back to positivity. McCain's speech last night and Bush's speech today were both very gracious. Condi got all misty on TV. Juan Williams got all choked up on Fox. It's been really nice to see.
In conclusion, hope never felt so good. Now let's dig in and prepare for the real, hard work ahead.
Finally, Happy Birthday
dashakay and Happy Belated Birthday
pamalax! I know both of you ladies are happy with your cosmic birthday present. :)
