dianora2Hidey-ho everybody. I have been away from the internet for a while. Friday night had a lovely belated birthday dinner with a small group of friends -- which was pimptastic because even though there were just seven of us we got put in the semi-private room, then yesterday I was at my sister-in-law's aunt's house in the Hamptons. That was an experience. At one point I was talking to an elderly lady who was having dinner that night with her friend Mary, who is the daughter of Richard Rodgers, as in Rodgers & Hammerstein. Also got a free jacket from a budding clothing designer whose grandfather was the man who brought Lalique to America from France. It was that kind of day. Old money, it's what's for lunch at the 8-bedroom house in Quogue. Oh, and apparently my nephew has now said his first full sentence: "I want a cookie." Smart child.
Today was about catching up a bit, including watching Bradley Whitford's appearances on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Real Time With Bill Maher. I've never seen Craig Ferguson's show before and I have to say I thought he was pretty hilarious. I know he's a friend of Carrie Fisher's which kind of makes me predisposed to like him anyway, but I liked that the show had a "let's just do whatever the hell we feel like" quality to it. Brad continues to be horny and wear tight pants which is a lovely combination. And then on Real Time he got extremely fired up over civilian deaths in Iraq in a way I found, erm, stimulating. Also, Reza Aslan is kind of hot. Too bad I found parts of the show extremely difficult to watch because of the right wing-nut they had on, and I do mean nut. As in, the audience was openly laughing at her at times, and Bill's audience doesn't generally do that. They may hoot or hiss and then Bill tells them to stop, but openly laughing? You have to be pretty far along on the nutty train for that.
In spite of the Bradley love, and the WWBWD church sign (see icon) my favorite part was a line of Bill's in his monologue: "Bush said, I would love to answer your ridiculous charge that I'm the devil. But I'm a little too busy this week trying to unite my party behind torturing people."
Moving on to TAR. Pretty good episode, I thought.
I love teams who go on TAR to decide whether to take their relationship "to the next level." If you need to go on a REALITY SHOW to figure that out, I assure you, the answer is already "Don't." Similarly, parents who feel the only way their children will be proud of them is to go on a reality show. Perhaps you need to examine what you are doing in your day to day life a bit more closely.
I also loved that the single moms bypassed the model guys on the side of the road right after talking about the "angel" that God sent them. Hey, ladies -- maybe God wanted YOU to be the GUYS' angel, hmmm?
Peter looks so much like Sam Champion that it kind of freaks me out.
So sick of the fighting couple. SO SICK. I kind of like the beauty queens so far. And I love the model boys. Everyone else I'm still whatever on, I think. I think it's cool (albeit a bit frightening) that the coal miner and his wife had never met an Asian person or a gay person before, and are, *gasp*!, liking them. I guess if even two people's horizons are broadened, then TAR has done some good.
Loved Phil attempting the NY accent. And, Phil, please stop now. :)
Desperate Housewives was okay. I admit I thought the Susan spillage scene was hilarious, and I don't usually find her slapstick stuff to be so. Tom's baby mama is so annoying I want to put my foot through the TV, though. And does anyone play quietly vaguely creepy better than Kyle McLachlan? This show is still on probation with me, though, so we shall see how it goes.
Starbucks is raising their coffee prices about 5 cents. Now, they say in the article that "Currently, a tall, or 12-ounce, cup of Starbucks coffee costs between $1.40 and $1.65. Twelve-ounce lattes cost between $2.40 and $3.10, depending on the market, and a tall mocha costs between $2.70 and $3.40." As you can imagine, NYC costs are all of those highest ones listed. So I want to know why WE have to have the increase too? How about those people who are getting off 70 cents cheaper get their prices raised by ten cents, and we get to keep our already overpriced prices? Grrr. (And please don't lecture me about NYC overhead, I am WELL aware, but that doesn't stop the principle from pissing me off.)
Work tomorrow. Meh.
Oh, and just so you know, my brother and I watched the first episode of Sledge Hammer! which he had bought on DVD, and yeah, it's still pretty funny. "Didn't you see the news?" "I don't watch the news. I make it."
