Well, the thing I like about Gaius is that he's never really intentionally evil. Rather, he kind of trips over it and then has to look for his glasses.

Yeah, and I think there was a lot of "well, geniuses are often a bit eccentric" attitude playing into that. And he could still seem so smooth and in control when he really concentrated. *g*
