it's not easy being me
Jul. 14th, 2008 11:40 pmHad a lovely weekend, sigh. Friday night I had dinner with the visiting
eloiseinparis, after which we went to the rooftop bar at the Hotel Gansevoort, as that was where E. was staying. What a scene! I have not been in the midst of a scene like that in quite a while. There was a line to get in which we were luckily able to bypass since E. was a guest. Nearly all the tables were reserved for bottle service, which meant a lot of empty tables and a lot of people standing around. I got hit on by a fat, unattractive nerdy dude, and apparently I dissed him without really meaning to. Because when we shook hands he looked at my ring and said, "Lovely," to which I, being me, rolled my eyes. Then I turned my head briefly to check my purse because I had a moment of panic about my wallet, and when I turned my head back, he was gone! He didn't even give it a chance. I felt kind of bad since E. said he had been checking me out for a while, so I guess he'd finally screwed up his courage. Granted, I would have truly dissed him eventually, but I probably would have talked to him for a little bit. Maybe. Anyway, it depressed me a little because as I said to E., I didn't even LOOK like a nerd that night. I was wearing contacts and I was dressed fairly chic and cute. And yet...I give off the vibe, apparently. Eau de nerd. Sigh.
eloiseinparis said it was because I looked nice and approachable, but I don't see how that could possibly be true. *g*
Nevertheless, it was a fun night and we totally lost track of time because of it, which is always nice, but it meant I didn't get home until after 2 and then had to get up bright and early to head down to
mefra3's for the rest of the weekend. That was delightful as well with good food and plenty of suburban pool time -- I really had a weekend of locational extremes, heh. In a moment designed by the universe to continue to keep me humble, her 6-year-old daughter told me she didn't recognize me when I got off the bus because the lipstick I was wearing made me look like Cruella DeVille. "Except you don't have white hair and you don't smoke." Well, thanks. (Hey, I was wearing all gray, I needed the lipstick as a dash of color!)
(Although one of the highlights of the weekend was getting a text from
em_meredith that said, "eman's co-mod is a cosplayer who hates bsg," which made me laugh and laugh.)
Oh, on the bus ride home we took the back roads to avoid traffic and I saw a place called Holy Grounds, which was a combination coffee shop and Christian bookstore. I had to share that.
So, because I had a great weekend, of course today sucked ass. Work stress with a dollop of health insurance wankery! Awesome. And tomorrow, TOMORROW, the NYC parade honoring Major League Baseball's All Stars will be happening OUTSIDE MY OFFICE WINDOW. With the streets getting closed off for the teeming spectators at 10 AM and finally concluding at 3, at which time all the teeming spectators will be well and truly drunk, I'm sure. GEE I CAN'T WAIT. I really think they should have just given us tomorrow off. I'm tempted to call in sick but I have too much to do at work (and it has to be done at the office). Dammit. Guess I will get exactly nothing done tomorrow, whihc will only add to my stress.
One small bright spot in the day was finding out, and I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, that the inevtiable Fringe panel at Comic Con will feature one Joshua Jackson. I WANT TO SEE PACEY WITTER! Have to figure out what I'm doing as I already need to sneak away for the BSG panel that day, and for 24 and Prison Break the day before. My co-workers are gonna kill me. BUT...PACEY!!!! *whimper* And is Jamie Bamber going to be there signing for Pulse 2 or what? I feel like the internets should have told me this by now.
I love this picture of Ewan a lot. And this one too.
NYT article on X-Files in which Gillian confesses she doesn't understand the big deal about Mulder and Scully. And for fun there's a link to the 1998 review for the first movie.
Did you know the remake of Cupid will now be taking place in New York instead of L.A.? I feel this is good news.
Interesting article about presidential polling possibly missing out on a portion of Obama's demographic: people who don't have land lines.
Bush addresses the Italian prime minister in Spanish. "Amigo, amigo!" Sigh.
The Dangers of Auto Replace.
The week that should have ended John McCain's campaign. The lack of press coverage of this stuff is sickening. And he didn't even mention McCain's squirmy evasiveness, and supposed lack of memory, on Viagra vs. birth control.
Burn Notice wasn't the greatest episode but I was so happy it was back it didn't really matter. I continue to not ship Michael and Fiona, at all. Considering what a shipper whore I am, that's saying something.
I Love Money continues to be the most awesome reality show ever. It's a gift that keeps on giving. Truly, VH1 is entirely too good to me.
I should really be catching up on sleep right now.
