under the sea

Today I met up with
bexatious and
leftofcenternyc in Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade. The weather was crappy -- extremely humid and intermittently raining -- and the Cyclone was closed for repairs, but it was still a fun day. We wound up with a good standing spot, directly opposite the judges' bandstand, where everyone stopped and preened. Downside was it was also where all the press photographers were standing, and they kept blocking our way. Grrr. Oh, at one point this Elvis guy took my hand and sang to me and tried to lick my face but I didn't let him. And Bex laughed so hard she was crying. Sigh. Glad I can amuse. I washed my hands really well when I got home.
Anyway, I took pictures of some of the insanity. A lot of the pictures came out blurry because people were walking by so fast, but oh well. This post is not dial-up friendly. :)
First, a picture of the Cyclone. Whee. Too bad it wasn't running.

Here's the Brooklyn Roller Derby Girls.

Catch of the day!

I love the scary one in the back.

This is a Kali mermaid or something.

I'm mad this came out blurry, but at the same time, it looks kind of cool like this.

Pasties! He was supposed to be an octopus or something. It was weird.

Pregnant mermaid!

I don't know what this guy's deal is.

Pretty costumes.

This was an undead/Egyptian theme. The group of them did the "Thriller" dance for the judges, it was pretty great.

Barbies are mermaids too!

Also, Happy Birthday to
no1_antielitist! Hope you had a great day.

Date: 2006-06-25 02:51 pm (UTC)That's right! We have those in Michigan, too - very common in the Upper Peninsula! I don't think I've seen the ones in the U.P. used like HERS are being used, though! :)

Looks like fun. Believe it or not, I've never been to Coney Island. Maybe when the girls are a little older, I can bring them.
