Had a crappy, stressful day today, starting with a sick passenger on the train ahead of mine making me even later than usual in the morning, and ending with having to miss a free movie and working late instead tonight. Ugh. (Not being able to get holiday shopping done during lunch or after work because you have too much work to do? Also lovely.) And I'm so, so, so sick of the crowds. I'm reaching my yearly holiday crowd limit. My subway cars are more crowded than usual -- thanks a lot for making me have to stand during my commute because you had to do some fucking shopping during rush hour for some reason -- and I walk outside and all I see are tourists tourists tourists, in their brightly-colored parkas and light blue jeans and white sneakers. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it instantly marks you as a tourist, is what I'm saying.) And they're in my way on the sidewalk and in my deli when I'm just trying to get my bagel and on my subway platforms when I'm just trying to get by and I JUST WANT EVERYBODY TO GO HOME. It's killing my soul.

*clears throat* Anyway. Why should I bitch about my workload and about tourists when there are so many other things to bitch about? Like...actually, you know what, I can't even get into the troops thing, except to comment that I love how "straining our resources" is a euphemism for dead soldiers.

Also, China doesn't want single or fat people adopting their babies. Good to know that being single is still perceived as a personal failing that makes you less worthy as a human being.

Oh, but my favorite story today is this: "...if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran...I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America." Said by a member of the United States House of Representatives. You must go to the link and read the whole letter, it's breathtaking.

But there are happy things. Like Lee Adama's arms. Those are very happy-making. Also, this icon that [livejournal.com profile] nnaylime made for me is so perfect for this post that that makes me happy, too. And I have all next week off (although let's face it, I'll have to check email). Must focus on the happy....

Until we moved into our current house, Goode was my Congressman. He just makes us all so proud. *gag* What is it with our elected officials making Virginia look so good lately?

I am coming into the city on Friday in direct opposition to my oath not to set foot on the island anywhere near Christmas. But I'm not going anywhere near Midtown, so hopefully I won't actually give in to the urge to run down slow-moving pedestrian traffic...

(I give the SMPT a pass if they're in front of major store windows. We need them there to feed the pickpockets, after all.)

Oh, God, Virginia politicians. {bangs head on desk} I don't see what's so hard to understand about a guy who wants to use the holy book of his own religion during the *ceremonial,* *photo-op* swearing in.

The article on China has so many lines that fill me with rage that I can't even begin to quote them all.

"“Some families were just turned down today. One was a couple where the husband had social anxiety disorder and takes Zoloft,” a violation of the new guidelines that bar people who are taking medication for anxiety or depression."

Yes, because a child who is ABANDONED BY HER PARENTS BECAUSE OF HER GENDER will never experience depression herself, and shouldn't be placed in a household with people who might understand that.

"Now, however, the agencies said, the Chinese government has formulated guidelines intended to recruit adoptive families with qualities that Chinese officials believe will provide the greatest chance that children will be raised by healthy, economically stable parents."

Respectful of my married friends, I economically stable the ASS off the majority of them. And the income guidelines they list? Where do they expect people in this country to live well on that?

"Couples must have been married for at least two years and have had no more than two divorces between them. If either spouse was previously divorced, the couple cannot apply until they have been married for at least five years."

Because otherwise they might decide to abandon their new child in favor of one of the more preferable gender. Oh, WAIT.

"Parents can be as old as 55 if adopting a child with special needs."

This just makes no fucking sense at all.

there are so many things that are upsetting about the fine gentleman from Virginia. the least of which is that he got elected with such atrocious grammar skills. please proof read your stupid letters before you send them out, asshole.

and as for the tourists. i feel your pain. working 2 blocks from Macy's Herald Square is a nightmare.
