So behind, so much to say, and so tired! I think I'll just talk a bit about New York Comic Con in this post. They had a lot more space this year and quite the turnout. I think they sold 50,000 memberships.

Actually, this barely gives a sense of the scope, but I like the shot anyway.

The only panel I went to was the Battlestar Galactica panel, which featured Tricia Helfer, James Callis, a dude from Sci Fi, and was moderated by Kevin Smith. Yeah, that was pretty much just about the best panel I've EVER BEEN TO. As a sample, one whiny fanboy got up and complained to the Sci Fi dude that Sci Fi never reruns BSG, to which Sci Fi guy was like, err, we rerun it a lot, why don't you go to our website and look at our schedule and see how often you can watch it. Kevin Smith looks straight at fanboy and goes, "Fucking pwned, dude." And he pronounced it poned. HILARIOUS. I am happy to report that James Callis was clean-shaven with short hair. Yes! *pumps fist* He looked mighty fine. Tricia Helfer looked very pretty, but what else do you expect. At the beginning they showed a special trailer that was the Six/Gaius love story "Boy Meets Cylon, Cylon Tricks Him Into Committing Genocide," etc. It was pretty fantastic. So Kevin Smith basically kicks off with, "Dudes, your show is fucking awesome." And it goes on from there. Snippets:

James talked about how he couldn't believe he got the part, and neither could any of his friends. "All of them said to me, 'You realize you're greatly miscast.'" He also didn't want to be anything like the original Baltar, "a weird creep next to a laptop in a toga." He summed up the original Baltar thusly: "Will you sell out the human race?" "I don't know, what do I get?" "A bathrobe." "Okay."

Jumping off from James' comment about being miscast, Kevin asked Tricia if she was taken aback at James' casting herself. "Did you think, 'Get it on with this guy? Are you kidding me? Look at me, I'm a fucking goddess!'" Tricia's response was cute, she was like, "Well, I don't quite see myself that way...." She made a comment about her husband and Kevin asked, "What kind of guy gets a woman like you?" to which she responded, "An attorney." Hee!

James said his scruffy beard and hair helped him to play Gaius as unhinged. He also said there were network talks about whether it was okay for him to have a beard. Yeah, really. He also mentioned how there had been discussion about his character smoking, to which James said, "Well, I'm not a fucking role model, am I?" (Imagine that in James' proper accent, it was hilarious.)

They both said that they didn't get a real sense of how awesome the show was going to be until they actually watched it, because their scenes were all so self-contained and they didn't get to see any of the Roslin/Galactica stuff being taped.

James mentioned that he thought it was doubtful that Gaius would ever be able to redeem himself to which Kevin Smith said, "Hey, Fat Apollo redeemed himself." Heh.

I did not get a good picture, at all. Here's the best I could do. Guy on the left is the Sci Fi guy.

My absolute favorite line, possibly in the history of the world: Kevin Smith says to James, "So, earlier this season you had a three-way with Six and Xena Warrior Princess. Dude, if you also nailed Gillian Anderson circa, say, 1999, you'd have the fucking trifecta." (HA HA HA. YES.) To which James said, "From your lips to God's ears."

Other random celebrity sightings: Hayden Panettiere and Chuck D. I also sat through the last half of the Buffy panel because it was on before the BSG panel. It was Juliet Landau, Bianca Lawson, and a bunch of guys I didn't recognize. LOL. Juliet Landau was very well-spoken and intelligent. Bianca Lawson, not so much.

Jim Butcher was there, which was a nice surprise, and I was able to spend some time with him, although not as much as I would have liked. Friday night after the Sci Fi special screening of BSG and Dresden, Jim got to have dinner with James Callis, Tricia Helfer, and Paul Blackthorne. BASTARD. He said he mostly talked to Tricia Helfer, who was very nice and down-to-earth, and they mostly talked about home remodeling. He said that Callis and Blackthorne mostly sat together and drank and were British. Hee. Also, he's apparently going to be an extra in an upcoming episode, which makes me laugh and laugh.

Gaming had a pretty big presence this year. There's nothing quite so entertaining as watching people play Dance Dance Revolution.

You can see here how they're perfectly in synch. They were amazing to watch.

But nothing seems quite so awesome as playing Guitar Hero out of the back of a car. No, I'm not making that up.

KICKASS.

All in all an interesting time but I am EXHAUSTED beyond all telling. I really have to go to bed now. Will post about TV tomorrow. By which I mean TAR and BSG because I'm not really watching the Oscars. What I've seen so far has induced a lot of head-scratching, but whatever.

How would one say 'pwned' anyway?

It depends on who you ask (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn#Pronunciation).

Hee. Kevin Smith = Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, Chasing Amy, etc., etc. Also comic book geek extraordinaire. He was one of the con's special guests so I'm sure he just said, "Dudes, I love Battlestar Galactica, you gotta let me run that panel" and they were only too happy to let him. I'm glad they did.

And I know I'm going to lose any and all geek cred I may have ever had by asking this, but: Who is Kevin Smith?

Omg, sounds so awesome! I had no idea NY Comic-Con was so cool. Will have to come sometime!

Now I'm hoping that Kevin will somehow MC the BSG panel at SD Comic-Con.

Thanks for the recap!

They're very much trying to make it into San Diego East. The movie studios haven't really come on board yet, but considering the turnout this year they may do so next year. Fingers crossed.

I keep hoping that Jamie will be in San Diego. Speaking of fingers crossed. :)
