greatest surprise ever

So, last night was quite interesting, as many of you have already heard.
oeilade,
divanoir,
leftofcenternyc, G. (not to be confused with G-Love) and I went to a Tim Gunn book signing at the Borders in Columbus Circle. We got there early and snagged seats in the third row. Not long before the signing is to start, a tall blonde woman walks up to some people sitting in the first row directly in my line of vision. "Hey," I think, "that looks an awful lot like...OH MY GOD."
It's fucking JANEL MOLONEY.
So I turn to
leftofcenternyc and we proceeded to have the quietest yet most intense freakout in the history of the world. Then we look down at the books in our hands and notice that Tim's cowriter is Kate MOLONEY. Well, that explains that. So I oh-so-subtly whip out the camera phone.

She then proceeds to sit down literally in the seat two rows directly in front of me. Her ponytail was right...there. Hee. She was with a woman and an older man who I believe were her cousin and uncle. She was also with this guy who I've definitely seen her in pictures with before.
Anyway, shortly before the signing starts Tim comes on the store loudspeaker to urge everyone to come see him at his signing. Hee. We were disappointed he didn't ask everyone to "gather round." What a missed opportunity. Then he and Kate Moloney finally show up and sit down and Tim is adorable as always.

The guy's head right in the front there belongs to Janel's uncle, by the way.
They didn't talk for very long. Some people asked fashion advice -- more than one person was a transplanted Southerner looking for advice on fitting into the New York fashion vibe, which was amusing. Then a little girl sitting in front of us asked who his favorite designer from the last season was. He said that he couldn't pick a favorite, "But I'll tell you who I didn't like." Yep, Vincent. He said that he didn't even know Vincent was going to be on the show; after they filmed the first scene where Tim greets the designers on the roof of the Atlas apartments, Tim turned to the producer and said, "What is HE doing here?" Turns out their first choice had bailed right before filming started and Vincent was, well, available. Tim was appalled he was even on the show in the first place. Hee. He also reiterated what he's said before that Michael's runway show really disappointed him, but he claims to be making sure that Michael doesn't backslide again!
Someone asked what was the most underutilized garment in a woman's wardrobe, and Kate and Tim agreed: foundation garments. Wear a bra if you need one, ladies!
They also talked very humorously about how difficult it was to write the book; one time Tim was supposed to come over to Kate's place in Brooklyn to write, but first they did some apartment hunting for Tim, and then they went back to her place and had some wine, and then they had some food, and then they listened to music, and then they had some more wine, and eventually Kate's husband came home to find them drunk and not having written anything. Hee.
So then the signing started, and
leftofcenternyc and I were busy obsessing over how to get to Janel. Janel, being in the front row, was one of the first to go get her book signed:

It looked like she's met Tim before, he greeted her with a European kiss-kiss and they chatted for a bit. It was quite the fandom collision.
Then she told the people she was with that she was heading out or whatever, so
leftofcenternyc and I got up and cut her off at the pass. I was ridiculously polite because I usually hate disturbing celebrities in the city, but this was obviously a special circumstance! *g* I apologized for bothering her but explained we were huge, huge fans of hers and just wanted to say hi and ask if we could get a picture with her. She was very nice and said of course and her boyfriend (?) offered to take a picture of both of us with her. So we did.

That's
leftofcenternyc in blue. Look how much taller she is than us, hee hee hee. She's one of those people who looks exactly the way she does on TV.
She explained that Kate was her cousin, and we said we figured, and then
leftofcenternyc asked her if she had any work lined up, and Janel said, "Well, I just moved here, actually, so that's what I've been doing." We told her that if she got work here, we would be there, and then told her how we'd seen Dule and Kristen Chenoweth recently. Janel said that Allison would be doing a play in the fall, so yay. Then
leftofcenternyc complained about how at "The Apple Tree" "Studio 64" had the worst seating and the guy with Janel (who she introduced as Alex) started laughing. "Studio 64?" And I was like, "Oh my god, we have Studio 60 on the brain," and I think that was when Janel started thinking oh, okay, they're crazy, I see. Anyway, I apologized again for disturbing her and she said not at all and that was that. Eeeeeeee!
But I wasn't done! I still had to get my book signed by Tim! So I went up there and told Kate Moloney that I'd just harrassed her cousin because I'm a huge fan of hers, and Kate said something to the effect that she was sure Janel loved it, and then she added, "Now there's a woman with a wardrobe." And Tim leaned in and said, "Who, Janel?" Hee! We all agreed Janel has awesome clothes.
So then Tim was signing my book and for some reason I called him "Mr. Gunn" and he said, "Oh, please, call me Tim, when I hear Mr. Gunn I look for my father," and what a Tim thing that was to say! Then G. snapped a picture of us for me.

What was so cute was that after Tim told me to make sure the picture came out and waited for me to do so. Awwww. I said, "It's gorgeous," and he laughed. And that was that.
So....one hell of a night! Thought it would just be a fun little booksigning and there's frickin' Janel frickin' Moloney! And she lives here now! Woo hoo! I really hope she gets stage work, that would be awesome.
Oh yeah, and I've been watching TV too.
WOW. That was....that was crack like only AI can deliver. The Celine Dion/Elvis duets was one of the most messed-up things I've ever seen. SO WRONG. SO VERY VERY WRONG. The "Staying Alive" video was INSANE and I need to watch it again on iTunes. Did you catch Gillian in there for a split second? WTF??? Eric McCormack saying that if every person who voted for Sanjaya gave just one dollar, think how much good we could do. Jack Black stealing the show for a few minutes. The horrible Quincy Jones song. Frickin' BONO. He really will do ANYTHING to raise money for Africa, and good on him for it. And KELLY! Oh, Kelly, I heart you so much and you were so frickin' genuine next to that Carrie Underwood whatever-the-hell-that was that I love you for it.
The videos were weird. Some were genuinely affecting, and then others were just to make people like Underwood and Abdul look good. Oy. Well, whatever works, quite frankly. More than one of the Africa videos made me cry. I'll go donate, but not to the Idol number.
I'd heard rumors that they weren't going to eliminate anyone tonight -- it makes sense. So lame how they did it, though. Not surprising, of course, but still lame. I wonder if there will be any effect from adding in tonight's votes to next week. Interesting.
That was an enjoyable, if not groundbreaking, episode. I've been dying for a Sun ep so I'm so pleased we finally got one. I love her so. I also love her flashback clothing a lot. The lengths she will go to in order to protect Jin, eh? Papa Jin is wonderful and almost made me cry. Papa Sun always makes me want to punch him in the face, which I suppose is the point. Newlyweds Jin and Sun are made of awwwwwwwwwwww.
I really liked all Sun's scenes with Juliet, and the moment where she finds out that the baby is Jin's is just transcendent. (I'm relieved that it's his.) But they better not kill Sun, or I will be very very sad. Knew Juliet was going back to do something sneaky. And sorry, writers, having her tell the tape recorder "I hate you" doesn't make her sympathetic to me. Oh well.
Mikhail is alive! Holy hell! I am pleased, as I think he's kind of awesome. Also, I didn't realize last week that the downed woman is Marsha Thomason of Las Vegas. Excellent. Also also, you know you're in trouble when Charlie is the one making sense. And clearly what has been missing from this show for far too long is Jin kicking some ass. YES.
Loved Hurley pretending to call his mom. His accidentally setting off the flare was silly, though.
I like that Sun is suspicious of Jack's behavior. Something had to have gone down while he was with them. I certainly hope we find out what this season.
I also watched the first episode of Celebrity Fit Club and just so you know, it looks like it's going to be kind of awesome, with Dustin "Screech" Diamond pissing everybody off and generally making an ass of himself. Does he not realize just how many of us know about the scatological porno video of his that leaked onto the internet? Whatever, Screech.
I'm disappointed but not surprised that Drive has been canceled. Oddly, I was just looking at the ratings yesterday and thinking that maybe I should stop watching so I wouldn't become further invested. Guess the decision was made for me!
Oh, and since practically everyone on my f-list is doing that Golden Compass meme, I joined the bandwagon.
This tooth and mouth pain is starting to freak me out. I think I have periodontitis. Either that or jaw cancer. The former is more likely, right? Or maybe most of this is being caused by TMJ, which I totally have. Whimper. And I had a horrible day at work today, I had to make one really crappy phone call and write two really crappy e-mails. Not fun. And at least some of it is going to continue into tomorrow. Great. On the plus side, I went to Toys R Us and got my nephew a Diego Sit-n-Spin for his birthday. :)
Speaking of birthdays, Happy Birthday
qill13! Hope it was a great one.
ETA: OMG! Carrie Fisher is going to be a judge for On the Lot!!! Guess I'll be watching that one now.
