beachy picspam

So I thought I would share some pictures from the Outer Banks in August, as well as a mini-picspam of the day trip
oeilade and I took to Coney Island at the end of that month. It's quite a study in compare and contrast. ;) So, as summer draws to a close (not that the temperature today would indicate that), I bring you two very different beaches...
I had a color printout of this photo up in front of my desk for a while after I got back from vacation as a "Serenity Now" manuever. It has since been replaced by my photo with Jamie, which serves the same purpose. *g*

A view down the beach. We tend to go later in the day because it's a little less crowded and because we love the light in the late afternoon/early evening. But really, the main thing I love about OBX is that it's never too crowded, this is pretty much par for the course:

Here's a view up the beach:

(This will all be in marked contrast to Coney Island, heh.)
One morning some of us ate at the Grits Grill for breakfast. Outside the Grits Grill they have this crazy old surfer DJ who spins disco tunes and asks trivia questions and makes up stories about the waiting customers. He said we were the Olympic Chicken Dancing team.

This is a huge fake sandcastle at Jockey's Ridge, the highest sand dune on the east coast. I'm standing on the other side of the highway at Kitty Hawk Kites.

Jellyfish! They came out in force one afternoon.
oeilade,
bbennett,
harpinred and I had to move our game of weight ball catch up the beach to avoid stepping on these suckers.

One day
bbennett rescued a seagull with a broken wing. Here she is telling Ocean Rescue about the problem. How Baywatch is this thing? Hee.
Our last day we were trying to enjoy the beach when these fuckheads sat down RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. Now, go back to those earlier pictures of the beach. There's a lot of room there, isn't there? Plenty of places to sit? So why would you sit down right in front of someone and completely obstruct their view of the ocean??? What the hell kind of idiots are you? When I got up to put my feet in the water I stood right in front of them in the hopes they'd get the message, but they didn't. So, here they are for the world to see. As I said at the time, if you're going to be such assholes, then you're going to get mocked on my blog.

With a fucking backpack, no less. Hey, dude, the hipster concert is on the mainland. Go away.
Oh, OBX. Sigh.

So the Friday after we got back,
oeilade and I went to Coney Island as this is the last season for the Astroland amusement park, they're tearing pretty much everything down to make way for hotels and luxury condos and a brand spanking new amusement center. I don't think I'd ever actually sat on the beach during the summer at Coney Island before. Needless to say it was a bit more crowded than OBX.
OBX view:

Coney Island view:

But, here's a slightly better view of the ocean:

On one side of us, we had this large Pakistani family:

When they left, they left behind scores of plastic soda and water bottles and garbage all over the beach. Even though there are garbage cans every ten feet on the beach. So disgusting and appalling, we were sorry we didn't notice it until they were gone because
oeilade would have gone ballistic on their asses. (She would, I've seen it.)
On the other side of us were some day laborers coming off duty:

(That's them on the left.)
Here's the view of Astroland from the beach:

You can see the Cyclone on the right.
We had people sit down right in front of us here, too, even though there were less obstructive empty spots available. So they got mocked, too:

Look at that underwear hanging out. Is that really what you think I want to see on the beach?
Then an even more annoying woman and her kid sat down even MORE in front of us, and right ON TOP of the other people. I really don't understand that shit. I don't understand her outfit, either:

You can tell it's New York by the rocks:

It was very windy and our umbrella (which was actually
intopolitics's umbrella in OBX) did not survive.

Farewell, umbrella, you did not serve us well.
Here's the beach from the boardwalk:

And here's one of the various fried eating establishments on the boardwalk.

I believe this place is fairly famous.

Here's the famous Parachute Jump. It's a national landmark so it can't be torn down. The only structures remaining are those with landmark status: the jump, the Cyclone, and the Wonder Wheel. Ironically, the Parachute Jump doesn't work any more and hasn't in years. The porta-potties are there because Coney Island was in the midst of hosting the professional volleyball championships. It was one hell of a setup. Who knew?

And here's the Wonder Wheel. It's the highest ferris wheel of its kind in the world. We went up in it and it pretty much scared the crap out of me, even though the cars are cage-like. Holy crap. And it's so big you only go around it twice. For 5 bucks.

Goodbye, Astroland!
We also went on the Cyclone, of course, which is truly the greatest roller coaster in the world and it makes me so so so happy whenever I go on it, which is not nearly often enough. I think that was only my third or fourth time, actually. I need to remedy that.
And finally, the original Nathan's, where we had lunch. You cannot compare the Nathan's you get in the mall food court to the original, it tastes different and better. Plus they have stuff like fried shrimp and steamed clams and frogs legs. It's quite a scene. Note the sign on the left about the hot dog eating contest. Awesome.

Finally we had some funnel cake (bought from a guy in a cart in an alleyway, that's the best way), and departed. It was a fun but exhausting day. Farewell, Astroland! You are seedy but fun.
