Tonight
nicole_anell and I went to see Kelly Clarkson at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. It was a great show, although I think the show of hers I saw a couple years back was more fun. She's so much more polished now; I think I enjoyed it more when she was still a bit overwhelmed by it all. *g* But she still sang the shit out of her songs and we all loved her for it. No lip synching for Kelly belly.
The curtain rose and she was in the My December album cover pose on a set of steps, wearing the dress and everything. She stayed there for a long moment, then the place went dark, and when the lights came up again she was in regular clothes and standing at the front of the stage singing. How'd she do that? Kicked off with "One Minute." The people in my section didn't stand for the whole show, except for the last song. That was a little weird, but better for my back, so I shouldn't complain. The three girls sitting in front of us so clearly wanted to stand up that I kind of wished they'd just done so. They were so cute, they had all kinds of hand movements down to the songs, and were singing together, and more than once just hugged each other out of sheer joy. I got a kick out of watching them. And I should note that when I say "kids" here I mean early 20s. *g*
She did most of the songs off My December and most of Breakaway. Only song from Thankful she did was "Miss Independent" and part of it was a mashup with "Jesus Walks," which was hot. Only non-album song she did was Patty Griffin's "Up to the Mountain," the song she sang on Idol Gives Back. And that performance was amazing, OMG. Some of the best vocals I've heard from her in a while.
She basically did all the ballads as a set in the middle. As often happens at concerts, during pauses in the songs people would scream. Well, during a pause in "Because of You," the screaming started and just built and built until we were loud as hell, and we didn't stop. Something just took hold of the crowd, it was great. Kelly literally couldn't sing because we were so loud. This went on for a while and she was clearly overwhelmed by it, it was very cool. She also killed on "Maybe," just a great performance. Oh, and "Be Still," which she said is her mother's favorite song.
She said "Addicted" is her favorite song of hers and as it is my favorite song of hers too, that makes me happy. I looooove seeing her do that one. Another great performance was "How I Feel" (how is that not a single yet?), which really got the crowd moving. And "Never Again" was fantastic, everyone was head banging with that one, or as close as one gets at a Kelly Clarkson concert. *g* Song I was most surprised people got really really into: "Go." People LOVE that song, apparently.
Encore was "Sober," "Chivas," and "Since U Been Gone" (natch). "Sober" was gah, awesome. It may not have been a hit but she knows her fans love it.
Only songs I'm disappointed she didn't do were "Beautiful Disaster" and "Hear Me." Oh well. I'm not really complaining.
What I love about seeing Kelly in concert is that it's not just that it's a lot of fun to see her perform, but you can also just sit back and lose yourself in her voice. Her vocals were totally on point tonight, at the height of her craft. Oh, Kelly. How you so awesome?
And you know, at both concerts I've been surprised at the number of guys (seemingly straight guys!) there. Guys love Kelly! It's true. And so do I. And I wasn't the oldest person there, either! Sure, I was ONE OF the oldest people there, but not THE oldest. *g* And all those kiddies had their cameras with them, which, it didn't even occur to me to do that. Damn, I really am old.
And Happy Birthday
md1016! Hope you had a great day filled with cheese. And/or pie.

Date: 2007-10-17 04:17 am (UTC)Kelly is an anomaly to me, because all of my straight male friends love her. (They call her KC, and seriously, we put on 'Since You've Been Gone' and everyone rocks out) :D

Yes, I bring one whenever I go to a concert. Why do you ask?

Date: 2007-10-17 10:01 pm (UTC)I ADORE "Maybe", and I really like "Be Still" too. Oh, and "How I Feel" needs to be a single right now. I can't help but dance whenever I hear it.
I'm glad it was fun, but I'm very jealous of you right now. :)
