Any thoughts on how much I should tip the movers tomorrow? There will be three guys. The actual moving cost is going to be close to $1000.

I'd say $20-$30 per mover.

Agreed. I tipped $20/per, but I moved almost 10 years ago... so I'd lean towards $30.

When I moved last November, I tipped $25/mover: I had three movers and about the same moving cost as yours.

Is either apartment a particular pain to get into or out of--i.e., upper-floor walkups with no freight elevator? Do you have particularly heavy or PITA-to-maneuver furniture? If so, you might have to go as high as $35/mover.

I had two movers last year and tipped $50 total.

$25-30 per mover sounds about right to me.

I would agree with around $20 per mover - unless you're moving in or out of a 4th story walk-up (or similar) in which case I'd give a little more for all the stair-traversing they'll be doing.

If you google "tipping movers", the number that most commonly comes up is 15% of the total bill - and it's typically posted on moving company sites. :) This page on tipping (http://www.itipping.com/tip-moving-company.htm), however, says that 5% of the total bill is sufficient.

Honestly, that sounds really low to me - it's NYC, you have a narrow-ish staircase, and moving is hard work. I'd follow the higher suggestions made here and offer at least $30 or $35 per guy.

Good luck with tomorrow!

At the least, $20 per guy. Keep extra cash in equal amounts on hand in case they're really good and you want to tip more than your initial amount. FYI, that's a great price for your move! Depending how it goes, of course. :-)

$30 a person sounds right to me.

I didn't tip my movers (didn't have the $ for it at the time), but I did supply drinks and food.
