This icon by [livejournal.com profile] iocaine cracks me up.

Watched The Hills. Um, is Heidi the stupidest person on the planet or what? Seriously. If there was a contest, I think she'd have a good shot at winning. Holy lord. Also -- why was she letting them sit in the VIP section? And then sitting down herself after the boss specifically said not to? Did the producers tell her to get in trouble on purpose or something? Seriously, WTF. Especially since she so obviously only got that internship in the first place because of the show. CRAZY. That said, I am so totally watching next week.

A submission of mine made it to Overheard in NY today.

Good Keira Knightley fug today. Is that or is that not Orlando Bloom? *squints*

You know, I am so very glad to have reconnected with [livejournal.com profile] researchgrrrl, and posts like this are one of the reasons why. Need to build your own explosives to hunt down supernatural entities? She can hook you up, yo.

This is nice: From Reuters: Two recently departed NBC programs, White House drama "The West Wing" and gay-themed comedy "Will & Grace," picked up bids for the TCA's Heritage Award, which recognizes long-running programs of lasting cultural or social impact. And then my head exploded. "M*A*S*H" veteran Alan Alda also drew a nod for his role as the Republican senator who loses the hard-fought race for president on the final season of "The West Wing."

....and They've slashed Homeland Security grants for New York. While raising the grants for Georgia. Um, okay. Thanks, guys. You're doing a heck of a job!

What's aggravating is that the percentage of aid for GA increased, while the percentage for NYC decreased. Has Georgia become more of a terrorist target than New York in recent years and nobody told me?

YES.

Um, no, not really. Hey, kudos on Overheard. You truly have arrived.

Well, the CDC is located in Atlanta. If you were looking to spread Anthrax/small pox/etc it would sure be helpful not to have the CDC around. Georgia is also home to four major military installations, as well as the second busiest port-of-entry (after Los Angeles) in the US. We're not all peanut farmers down here. ;D And let's not forget that Georgia was the location of terrorism five years before NYC and DC.

And yeah, Georgia got a 40% increase, but 40% of what? I would venture a guess that the budgets for NYC and DC are still vastly greater than Georgia's.

"And let's not forget that Georgia was the location of terrorism five years before NYC and DC."

I just released in making this comment that I forgot about the 1993 WTC attack. My apologies if I sounded flippant, which wasn't my intent. I only wanted to say that GA has also been a victim of terrorism.

You make a good point about the CDC, except I don't think that was mentioned in the report as one of the targets they're protecting (though I could be wrong). And yes, NYC still gets the most money overall, as we should. But when it's broken down per capita, we're at #23 or something like that. Places like Wyoming get more money per capita than we do, which is insane. Places in the middle of nowhere are using their terrrorism grant money to refurbish their offices. (OK, THAT was flippant. *g*)

Oh, I definitely think there should be accountability across the board as to how the money is being spent. It *certainly* doesn't need to go towards refurbishing some mayor's office! ;D

I haven't read the reports (and if you could provide a link so I could I would be grateful) but I imagine that every single target wouldn't be listed. Perhaps not to give anyone any ideas? I also think that looking at the per capita numbers probably gives a skewed view of the situation. The money isn't being used to protect people on an individual basis, but rather being used to protect groups of people and targets. I don't see how looking at the per capita numbers gives a realistic picture.

The Daily News article above is the one that mentions the stadium. There's also this (http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/06/no_icons_no_mon.html) from ABC News.

Per capita is an issue because on a daily basis we have more people using our subways than even exist in most cities in America. Which makes a disaster here a hundred times more difficult to manage and combat than a disaster anywhere else.

I have no problem with other cities getting money. It's taking money away from NYC that I don't get. This isn't an argument you can win with me, I'm sorry. I saw the towers fall with my own eyes out my office window. I was there, and I remember.

I agree with most of your points, I really do. And honestly, I'm not trying to win an argument. I guess what isn't sitting well with me is the idea being put out there that other states aren't deserving of *any* increase in money. I really want to ask these lawmakers how much they feel is 'appropriate'. One million for Georgia and two million for Florida total? It frustrates me because this only further polarizes the country.
